All Jacks' in Australia
Yeah, we jumped across the ditch (the Tasman Sea) and landed in Sydney. We immediately dove in to all sorts of tourist type activities. We started the trip off with a visit to Hunter Valley. For all of you who are not connoisseurs, it is the heart of Aussie wine making, or so I am told. It was a beautiful area, and well worth the visit. We both enjoyed multiple samples. We spent the next few days walking around Sydney including stops at Bondi Beach, Manly Beach, Taronga Zoo, and the Opera House. Special thanks to Rachel and her flatmates for letting us crash in their house.
Then we hired a camper van for $1 a day and headed South. We had to pay for insurance and gas, so all told we made the drive from Sydney to Melbourne for under $150. The drive is similar to driving from Vancouver to Smithers (Hockeyville, www.cbchockeyville.ca). We stayed overnight at a stop sign called Cann River.
In Melbourne we were greeted by the gracious Locke family. We immediately jumped back in to the tourist world. Georgia's boyfriend (Kieran) plays professional Aussie Rules Football, so we watched him play in the afternoon. He then took me to an evening game at the MCG. A small stadium that seats 120,000+!!! Although there was "only" 55,000 at the game, it was an incredible atmosphere. Damn those Collingwood fans. Jen and I also took in the Victoria Square Market. It is a massive flea market with permanent stalls, so the prices aren't all flea marketish. On one of our last days we drove down to Bells Beach and Anglesea. Bells Beach is home to Rip Curl and world class surfing. The last thing we did in Melbourne was take a tour of Rod Laver Arena. It is home to the Australian Open.
